Monday 17th August, Missolonghi
We arrived safely into the "marina" at Missolonghi and tied up to a pontoon
just by Piper and Arwen. What a strange place! The doom and gloom book is
unusually gloomy about this place to the point it puts most people off
coming. Someone in Gouvia had however said this was a "must see" place - and
they were right. The marina was built many years ago but they only got as
far as putting in the pontoons. A couple of guys are now working hard to
turn it into a full service marina and there are now a couple of buildings
(with showers) and some water and lecky. By next year it should be fully
functional. Today however it is totally free to stop..... and there are no
charter boats!! None!!!! Heaven.
It seems a lot hotter here than it was in Sami – probably as the water
temperature in the lagoon is much warmer given it is totally enclosed.
Overnight temperatures are only dropping to high 20’s with 35 during the
day. There is no wi-fi in the marina yet (although it is promised for next
year) but I can get a reasonable signal from the free wi-fi in town. This is
very unusual – free wi-fi. Arwen and Piper cannot get the same signal so it
is probably down to our better antenna. I reckon it must be at least half a
mile to the transmitting antenna so we have our antenna strapped to the top
of the boat hook which is now half way up the mast!
Its a good 20 mins walk into town - and Missolonghi is a big town. Taxis are
only 3 Euros though. Very little English seems to be spoken confirming the
lack of tourists about - and it seems a lot more friendly that were we have
been the last 3 weeks. The marina is totally protected given its location a
mile from the see up a narrow channel and certainly a good place to stop for
a while - which is what we are doing.
Beer is cheap in the Taverna near the commercial dock and they even show
English football but there must have been a major malfunction of the
television last night as the end result of the Liverpool game I was watching
was Liverpool loosing 2-1 to Spurs. I will try and find a different bar next
time for a television that works.
Today we caught a taxis to town to take up some laundry and I managed to buy
some oil for the sail drive leg which now needs changing - the oil silly!!
Not a lot more to report other than we are probably staying here for a few
more days at least to explore.
More tomorrow.
