It's tuesday and it's still hot. We are still moored up in Argostoli enjoying a rest before setting off (probably tomorrow) to head back to the east side of the island.
Argostoli is a big town with most things here apart from a chandlers. We have met up with June and Steve on Piper and had three great evenings with the mandatory hang overs the day after. June is after a 12V fan (just like the ones we have) but cant find a chandlers to get one. We even took the ferry over to the other side of the bay yesterday to look for one - it was a nice trip though!! We are moored stern to on the town quay - my first attempt using the bow anchor which worked very well. The upside is you can sit and watch all the scantily clad young ladies walking up and down the quay front - the down side is that it feels like you are in a goldfish bowl. There is a good argument to go bows to - although this means a lot of mess (ie mud) in the cockpit when you pull up the kedge anchor. Next quay I think it will be bows to.
I think I would give Argostoli a 7/10 and a good place to stop a while. June tells me it is 8 Euros per night - if you go and see the port police! I may not!!
Liz outlined the places we stopped on the way down here. Spartahori, the meal was Ok so I would give that a 7/10. Kioni was great (9/10) but very crowded. The afternoon entertainment - watching the charter boats come in was magic. The last Flotilla boat was instructed to go stern to and drop his anchor across the anchors of ten boats down the key. Wonderful entertainment.
We anchored one night in Vathi but didn't get there until late (8pm) so didn't go ashore. That looked a place worthy of another visit and given there was plenty of room to anchor - we may try and go next week before we drop Liz and Ju off. We did try to spend that night in one house bay (aptly named as there are two houses - or at least one house and one church, and church is a house so that makes two not one..... where was I)....oh yes two house bay (or is that one - are you confused? I am)....but the wind started gusting at 30 knts, everyone dragged their anchors mid afternoon, so we left. Good lesson in anchoring as to date we have not had a sign of the anchor dragging. There was a good explanation of why we dragged but I won't bore you with it here.
So that's about it then. Back to the heat and the cold beer. Plan is to head up to Poros or Sami tomorrow and then into the channel between Ithaca and Cephalonia on Saturday and then back up to Lefkas on Tuesday to drop Liz and Ju off.
